Mary Saunders, L.Ac.

Mary Saunders has been a practitioner of acupuncture and Oriental medicine for over 20 years. She received an undergraduate degree from Austin College in 1978 with an emphasis in psychology and Spanish language. Mary is fluent in Spanish and spent five years as a teacher and translator in Spain prior to entering her formal training at Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, NM.

Graduating from SWAC in 1986 she has since maintained an acupuncture practice treating a wide variety of health concerns including stress, fatigue, headaches, back pain, digestive and hormonal imbalances. Ms. Saunders uses a variety of Oriental medical techniques that promote self-healing, including gentle needling, abdominal massage, and cupping.

Mary brings a lifelong interest and intensive study of dietary therapy and nutrition to her patients. She uses simple and effective programs that reduce dietary and metabolic stress. Chinese herbal medicines and other supplements may be recommended to complete each patient’s care.

Mary is a Diplomate in Acupuncture (NCCAOM), a Licensed Acupuncturist in Colorado, and is trained in the Hakomi method of body-centered psychotherapy. She has also completed Designs For Health's Professional Enhancement Course for Nutritionists.

She has worked at the Boulder campus of Southwest Acupuncture College in many capacities since it opened in 1997: as its first Director for several years, and most recently, as a clinical instructor.

Mary co-founded the Community Acupuncture Clinic in Boulder in September 2004. It was the second of now many acupuncture clinics using this model throughout the United States. Thanks to the effectiveness of this ancient medicine and the generosity of the community, the clinic was a great success.

Mary founded Boulder Community Acupuncture in March of 2009, expanding the hours of operation and the services offered to better serve the community.

She lives in Boulder with her husband, Whitfield Reaves, and their son, Martin. Whitfield is the author of The Acupuncture Handbook of Sports Injuries and Pain. Martin is a professional slalom skateboard racer, finishing second in World Cup points in 2009. He is a freshman at Montana State University, in Bozeman, where he is majoring in mechanical engineering.
